Korean enterprises promote Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in Vietnam

The Korean Embassy and the Korean Business Association in Vietnam - KORCHAM held a Press Conference on corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities of Korea's FDI in Vietnam on June 10th, 2015.

The press conference was attended by Mr. Nguyen Van Trung, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, Mr. Jun Dae Joo, Korean ambassador in Vietnam, Mr. Do Nhat Hoang, Director General of the Foreign Investment Agency, Mr. Hang Ha Ryu, Chairman of Korcham and 11 typical Korean businesses having implemented effective operations with social responsibility and more than 60 press, television agencies.
In his “Welcome remarks”, Mr. Nguyen Van Trung, Deputy Minister praised the contribution of Korean business to Vietnamese society, particularly in the context that Korea was the largest FDI investor in Vietnam in terms of investment scale and number of investment projects. He also emphasized that "With Korean businesses, Vietnam can benefit both economic and social aspects ... We always respect and promote the social activities of the enterprise".
According to Korean ambassador in Vietnam Mr. Jun Dae Joo, This is because "Korean businesses themselves think that they are not foreign enterprises, but are domestic business and are Vietnamese member”. From that idea, Korean business partners are not only important economic partners, but also always try to implement social responsibility with Vietnam.
President of the Korea International Trade Association Ryu Hang Ha said that South Korean enterprises take on corporate social responsibility as part of their operations in host countries.
The eleven enterprises at the press conference, including Samsung Electronics Vietnam, Asiana Airlines, CJ Group, Doosan Vina Ltd., Daum Kakao Group, Lock&Lock Vina, Miwon Vietnam, Nonghyup Bank, Shinhan Vietnam Bank, Shinsegea, Woori Bank emphasized that they consider themselves not as foreign investors but as domestic enterprises and a part of Vietnamese society. They all implement a range of social activities for their employees and for the local community.
By August 2015, the cumulative investment from Korea in Vietnam reaches $43 billion with more than 4,600 enterprises doing business in Vietnam. Bilateral trade are over $30 billion in 2014 and, after the Vietnam - Korea FTA becomes effective, the goal of reaching $70 billion by 2020.
There are now approximately 130,000 Vietnamese people living in South Korea and about 140,000 South Koreans living in Vietnam. The number of people traveling between the two countries this year is estimated to exceed 1 million.
Through sharing information widely and a wide range of effective community welfare activities of Korean FDI in the context that the acknowledge of social responsibility activities in the business community is advanced, the CSR activities of enterprises in Vietnam in general will be boosted further in the future.
