Van Don International Airport received its first flight at 10am today before if officially opens in December.

This is the first airport to be built by a private Vietnamese firm. Construction started in March 2016 by Sun Group with total investment VND7.7 trillion (US$333.48 million) under the build-operation-transfer (BOT) model.

Chairman of Quang Ninh Province’s People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Long said the success of Van Don International Airport would help the province attract more investment for fast and sustainable development.

The project will also open trade and development opportunities for the economic and tourism development of Van Don and contribute to turning Quang Ninh into an international tourist centre.

The airport terminal covers nearly 27,000 sq.m, and will have a capacity of 2.5 million passengers per year by 2020.

It will able to handle seven aircraft at a time before being expanded to 15 by 2030.

A Dutch company has been hired as a management consultant and to conduct staff training.
